Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops is desktop virtualization software formerly known as XenApp and XenDesktop. It provides a unified work platform to give employees the freedom to work from anywhere, on any device. Citrix centralizes all business applications and desktops, in a way which is no different from using a locally installed app or desktop.
How does Citrix work?
You can access Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service on Citrix cloud. Citrix acts as a terminal server. To put it simply, when you use Citrix, you are not running applications on your own computer. Essentially, you are using your computer to log into another computer which serves as a hub to access your desired applications for usage. To access files, you will always have to log into Citrix, since any files you save will not be stored on your local computer. Applications will load on any device including mobiles and tablets, and administrators can deliver applications from the data center to any device, anywhere, anytime.
It works much the same with desktops – one centralized server desktop can be delivered to other computers. It duplicates itself to guest desktops and looks like its running locally, providing full access with all the same capabilities.
Why use Virtual Apps and Desktops?
From a business standpoint, there are a few reasons why Citrix is an attractive option:
Save time – for a business which contains physical on-site desktop computers, administrators can edit these all at once – roll out updates, or implement a newer OS on one machine and outsource it to all machines.
Cut costs – Implementing a Windows OS, or applications separately to all on-site computers would require separate purchases of licenses for each. This could cost thousands. You only need to buy once and every employee can reap the benefits for free. Access to industry standard apps on a large scale can increase a workforce’s productivity.
Secure – Sensitive app data stays safe. In industries which require confidential data protection, information can be stored on the centralized database, rather than physical hardware which can be lost or stolen.
Compatibility – Citrix servers aren’t just limited to Windows desktops. They can duplicate Mac or Linux desktops too.
